History

Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga also has its own history and stories.Three is they are prominent. The first story is about Vindhya Parvat (Monte). Once upon a time Narada (son of Lord Brahma), known for his non-stop cosmic journey, visited Vindhya Parvat. In its spicy way Narada said Vindhya Parvat about the greatness of MountMeru. This became jealous Vindhya Meru and decided to be larger than Meru. Vindhya began the worship of the god Shiva, to become more of Meru. Vindhya Parvat practiced severe penance and worshiped parthivlinga (A linga physical material) along with Lord Omkareshwar for almost six months. As a result Lord Shiva was pleased and blessed with your desired blessing. At the request of all the gods and sages Lord Shiva made two parts of the slings. One half is called Omkareshwara and other Mamaleshwar or Amareshwar. Lord Shiva gave his blessing to grow, but it took a promise Vindhya never be a problem for devotees of Shiva. Vindhya began to grow, but not kept his promise. Even the sun and the moon is blocked. All deities approached sage Agastya help. Agastya and his wife came to Vindhya and influenced him that he would not grow until the sage and his wife returned. They not returned and Vindhya is there as it was when they left. The scientist and his wife remained in Srisailam which is considered as Dakshina Kashi and one of the Jyotirlinga Dwadash.

The second story relates to Mandhata and penance for his son. King Mandhata of Ishvaku Clan (an ancestor of Lord Ram) worshiped Lord Shiva here until the Lord appeared as a Jyotirlinga. Some scholars also tell the story of the children-Ambarish and Mucchkund of Mandhata, who practiced severe penance and austerities here and pleased Lord Shiva. Because of this mountain is called Mandhata.

The third story of the Hindu scriptures say that there ever was a great war between Devas and Danavas (demon), which won Danavas. This was a major setback for Devas and therefore Devas prayed to Lord Shiva. Satisfied with their prayers, Lord Shiva emerged as Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga and defeated Danavas.

Omkareshwar is a Hindu temple dedicated to God Shiva. It is one of the 12 revered Jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva.


These are the reference twelve ancient pilgrimage center that is located in the Shiv Purana. Jyotirlingas called for the Lord Shiva is said to have revealed himself to his devotees as light Jyoti. Even today the devotees are said to have gotten his darshan as jyoti in these places. These are 12 jyotirlingas.

Kedarnath

Lord Kedarnath Temple is located on the banks of river Mandakini is on the west side of Cedar Mountain in the Himalayas. This place is reached by road via Rishikesh, where it is more than 200 kms. The last phase is completed with a steep hike of about 3-4 hours.

Viswanath 

Lord Viswanath Temple is located in Varanasi. While it is a revered place some Muslim rulers had destroyed and desecrated and built a mosque next to it. The place has been  modernized by later kings.

Somnath

Lord Somnath Temple is located near the town of Veraval in western Gujarat. Veraval comes from Rajkot. The present temple is a large imposing structure and is located right on the seashore.

Mahakaleswar


Bhagwan Mahakal Temple is located in the city of Ujjain. Ujjain is near Indore, and is reached by train through Ratlam or Bhopal.

Omkareshwar
                           

The Lord Omkareshwar Temple is situated on the banks of Narmada River in between Indore and Khandwa. The temple is located on an island, which is surrounded by the NarmadaRiver.

Rameshwar
         
The consecration of the temple of the Lord Rameshwar by someone other than the Lord Himself Rama, and hence the name. It is located on a large island surrounded by sea on the south side of India. It is approached from Madurai, which itslf is well connected by all means of transport.

Mallikarjuna
                   

The temple of Lord Mallikarjuna is located in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The temple is located in the town of Srisailam Patalganga the banks of river Krishna. Mountain Srisailam is viewed with reverence as the Kailash of the South.

Trayambakeshwar
                                                         
Trayambakeshwar Lord resides in a beautiful setting about 20 kms from the city of Nashik. It is a place connected wel and can also be reached from Bombay in about 4-5 hours.

Bhimashankar


Lord Bhimashankar Temple is located in a forest reserve of about 3 hours drive from Pune. The place is hilly with stunning greenery all around.

Nageshwar

Nageshwar Temple of the Lord is situated in Gujarat, and is about 12 kms from Gomti-way to Bhet-Dwarka Dwarka

Baijnath

The Lord Baijnath Temple is located in Bihar. The rail route from Patna to Kolkata is a place called Kiul. About 100 kilometers south-east of this place is Devghar - where is located this ancient temple.

Grishneshwar
                       
The Temple of the Lord Grishneshwar is located right next to the famous ElloraCaves. It is on an island called Mandhata or Shivapuri in the Narmada river; the view of the island is said to be like the Hindu symbol.

Basilica of Bom Jesus Church

The Basilica of Bom Jesus, Goa perhaps most famous and among the most venerated by Christians worldwide church, partly in ruins, but still a model of simplicity and elegance, and a good example of Jesuit architecture.

There is a only church in Old Goa, which is not reflected in the exterior, the lime plaster have been removed by a conservationist zeal of Portugal in 1950.

Situated in Old Goa 10kms east of Panaji, the Basilica of Bom Jesus is a World Heritage monument site.

The foundation stone of this remarkable large church was laid on November 24, 1594 and the church was consecrated by Father Alexia de Menezes, Archbishop of Goa and Primate of India enshrined when it was completed on 15 May 1605. In 1946 was elevated to the rank of minor basilica.




The Jesuit Order was abolished in 1759 and its property confiscated by the Portuguese State. The church was nevertheless allowed him to continue services.

This magnificent building stands as a magnificent example of Baroque architecture in Goa. The church is called "Bom Jesus" which means that whoever is dedicated 'baby Jesus' good Jesus' o. The facade has in it, on top, letters, "their", which are the first three letters of Jesus in Greek.

The imposing façade built in black granite in an exquisite combination of Doric, Corinthian and composite styles, is incredible for its simplicity. It measures 183 meters long, 55 feet in breath, and 61 feet high. The altar is 54 feet high and 30 feet wide. The pillars and the details are carved in basalt was brought from Bassein, about 300 kms away. The interior of the church is built in Corinthian style mosaic and is known for its charming simplicity.



The roof was tiled at first. The church is cruciform in plan. Flying buttresses on the north side of the church are recent additions. A one-story structure adjacent to the church in its south wing connects to the Professed House.

The three-story facade of the Church Ionic shows, Doric and Corinthian orders, and has a main entrance flanked by two smaller ones, each with Corinthian columns supporting a pediment. There are two chapels, a high altar and sacristy, and a choir within the Church itself. There is a bell tower in the back.

When you enter, under the choir, to the right is an altar of San Antonio and the left is a wooden statue carved exceedingly well San Francisco Javier. In the center of the nave on the north wall is the cenotaph of the benefactor of this church, Don Jeronimo Mascarenhas, Captain of Cochin died in 1593 bequeathing the resources that this church was built. The two columns supporting the choir slabs bear enrolled in Portuguese and Latin start dates of construction and consecration.

Facing the cenotaph, projecting on the south wall is a richly carved wooden pulpit with a canopy on top. The pulpit has on three sides the figures of Jesus, the 4 evangelists and 4 doctors of the Church. The bottom of the pulpit represents seven digits as if they support.

A gallery of project, which was designed for the use of the dignitaries on solemn occasions, runs along the two longer sides of the Church.

The altar at the end of the nave is flanked by two altars decorated on the cruise, one dedicated to Our Lady of Hope and the other to San Miguel. The high altar is richly gilded figure of baby Jesus and above it is a large figurine of St. Ignatius of Loyola founder of the Jesuit order, looking earnestly in a medallion on which is inscribed "SU". Above the medal, the Holy Trinity - Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are described. In the cruise on the north side is the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament.

On the south side of the cruise is a chapel with golden spiral columns and floral ornaments made of wood, where the sacred relics of the body of St. Francis Xavier are kept. The inner of the chapel is richly decorated with carvings and paintings depicting scenes from the life of the Saint.


A beautiful silver statue is kept in front of the coffin. The silver casket, which serves as a reliquary containing the sacred relics of the body of St. Francis Xavier, is beautifully carved, and once was studded with precious stones. The coffin is divided on each side into seven panels, each of which has two relief plates depicting important events in the life of the saint.

Next to the Chapel of San Francisco Javier is a hallway leading to the sacristy, entered by an exquisitely carved wooden door. It is an oblong structure with a domed apse in the end. Along the walls portraits of several previous saints delicately carved chest of drawers are kept. On the altar in the apse in an iron box containing a golden rose blessed by Pope Pius XII and gifted to the city in 1953. At the foot of the altar is the tomb of the founder of the sacristy, Balthazar da Veiga who died in 1659. a painting that gives a clear idea about the state of the body of St. Xavier a hundred years ago is displayed near the altar.

Inside the basilica design is simple but great. A simple wood has replaced the original vaulted ceiling. To the left of the door upon entering the basilica is a statue of San Francisco Javier, but the visitors' attention to the enormous and ornate gilded altarpieces that extends from floor to ceiling, behind the altar noted.

Tawang is at once historical and naturally gifted. It is located at a distance of 183 Kms of Bomdila and is situated at an altitude of 3,500 meters above sea level. The natural beauty and solitude of the Gudpi and Chong-Chugmi ranges, river Tawang chu and Tawang valley are very fascinating.

Tawang Monastery, which is an important center of Buddhism Mahayana is found here. This famous Gelukpa monastery was founded during the 17th century by Mera Lama Lodre Gyaltso who is regarded as a contemporary of the fifth Dalai Lama.



It is the second largest monastery in Asia and India's largest controlling 17 Gompas in the area. The Best Part of this monastery are the auditorium stunning three floors and 28 foot high golden Buddha statue. There is also a library with an impressive collection of books and manuscripts. The famous Buddhist scriptures inscribed gold Kangyur and Tengyur are preserved here.

Another attraction is the Tawang Monastery Urgyelling that is considered sacred because it is the birthplace of Thangyang Gyatso, the 6th Dalai Lama. Bramadung Chung & Sengsarbu Ani Gompa & yanggong Ani Gompa are also well known convents and monasteries with Ani Gompa be one of the oldest in the country.

Pious Coorgs take a holy dip in a nearby pond and bring home the holy water of the small pond for worship on the day of Cauvery Sankramana, the holiest day for national Coorgs. Pilgrims from neighboring districts and Tamil Nadu visit Talcauvery for a month after Sankramana Tula. The gush of water of the small pond at an auspicious time is considered as a wonder. After the holy dip, the pilgrims take a flight of stairs leading to the top of the Brahmagiri hill, offering a feast for lovers of nature. The bus service is available to Talacauvery to Madikeri.

Bhagamandala is in the foothills of Talcauvery and is 39 km from Madikeri. Bhagamandala is the confluence of the holy rivers of Cauvery and Kannike and legend has it that a third river Sujyothi a subterranean stream links the two rivers. The Bhagandeshwara temple is on the banks of the two rivers and is one of the important centers of pilgrimage in Coorg. Pilgrims come to Talcauvery only after offering worship Bhagamandala. It is customary for men Coorg shave his head in Bhagamandala in the case of a family in morning. Bhagamandala is also famous for honey and beehives.

Mysore Palace, also known as Mysore Maharaja Palace is one among the largest palaces in India. It is situated in the city’s center. The palace was built in the year 1897 using wood, which was damaged due to fire. It was later reconstructed in the year 1912. The architecture is a blend of Hindu, Islam, Gothic and Rajput styles. The stunning interior is a display of intricate craftsmanship. While it is a feast to your eyes during day time, you will be completely mesmerized by the sight of the palace illuminated by over 98000 bulbs in the night.

Karanji Lake

Karanji Lake is situated at the foot of the famous Chamundi Hills. King of Mysore constructed the lake. The 90-acre water body is amongst the biggest lakes in the state of Karnataka. The lake is behind Mysore Zoo and under its control. Karanji Lake encourages migratory birds and you can find over 90 species of birds here. There is a picturesque park around the lake. The park has a huge enclosure for birds and it is considered the largest of its kind in the country. This gives you the opportunity to closely observe the birds.




Chamundi Hills

Chamundi Hills is 1065 meters above the sea level. It is just 3 kms from Mysore.The Chamundeshwari temple on top of the hill belongs to 11th century. It was renovated in 1827. Half way up the hill, you will find and idol of bull, called Nandi. The specialty of the 5-meter tall statue is that it was sculptured out of a single rock in 1659. You need to climb 1000 steps to reach the Chamundeshwari temple.

Brindavan Gardens
 
Brindavan Gardens is situated below Krishnaraja Sagar dam. The work to construct the garden commenced in 1927 and it was completed in the year 1932. It is spread across 150 acres of land and it is one of the best gardens in the country. It houses a botanical park and many fountains in various shapes and sizes. The musical fountain is one of its main attractions. To enjoy the colorful fountains, the ideal time of visit would be after sunset.
