 Tourism of  Tawang monastery

Tawang is at once historical and naturally gifted. It is located at a distance of 183 Kms of Bomdila and is situated at an altitude of 3,500 meters above sea level. The natural beauty and solitude of the Gudpi and Chong-Chugmi ranges, river Tawang chu and Tawang valley are very fascinating.

Tawang Monastery, which is an important center of Buddhism Mahayana is found here. This famous Gelukpa monastery was founded during the 17th century by Mera Lama Lodre Gyaltso who is regarded as a contemporary of the fifth Dalai Lama.



It is the second largest monastery in Asia and India's largest controlling 17 Gompas in the area. The Best Part of this monastery are the auditorium stunning three floors and 28 foot high golden Buddha statue. There is also a library with an impressive collection of books and manuscripts. The famous Buddhist scriptures inscribed gold Kangyur and Tengyur are preserved here.

Another attraction is the Tawang Monastery Urgyelling that is considered sacred because it is the birthplace of Thangyang Gyatso, the 6th Dalai Lama. Bramadung Chung & Sengsarbu Ani Gompa & yanggong Ani Gompa are also well known convents and monasteries with Ani Gompa be one of the oldest in the country.
