History

Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga also has its own history and stories.Three is they are prominent. The first story is about Vindhya Parvat (Monte). Once upon a time Narada (son of Lord Brahma), known for his non-stop cosmic journey, visited Vindhya Parvat. In its spicy way Narada said Vindhya Parvat about the greatness of MountMeru. This became jealous Vindhya Meru and decided to be larger than Meru. Vindhya began the worship of the god Shiva, to become more of Meru. Vindhya Parvat practiced severe penance and worshiped parthivlinga (A linga physical material) along with Lord Omkareshwar for almost six months. As a result Lord Shiva was pleased and blessed with your desired blessing. At the request of all the gods and sages Lord Shiva made two parts of the slings. One half is called Omkareshwara and other Mamaleshwar or Amareshwar. Lord Shiva gave his blessing to grow, but it took a promise Vindhya never be a problem for devotees of Shiva. Vindhya began to grow, but not kept his promise. Even the sun and the moon is blocked. All deities approached sage Agastya help. Agastya and his wife came to Vindhya and influenced him that he would not grow until the sage and his wife returned. They not returned and Vindhya is there as it was when they left. The scientist and his wife remained in Srisailam which is considered as Dakshina Kashi and one of the Jyotirlinga Dwadash.

The second story relates to Mandhata and penance for his son. King Mandhata of Ishvaku Clan (an ancestor of Lord Ram) worshiped Lord Shiva here until the Lord appeared as a Jyotirlinga. Some scholars also tell the story of the children-Ambarish and Mucchkund of Mandhata, who practiced severe penance and austerities here and pleased Lord Shiva. Because of this mountain is called Mandhata.

The third story of the Hindu scriptures say that there ever was a great war between Devas and Danavas (demon), which won Danavas.
